Olympic silver medallists finish the year on a high note

LISHEEN’S finest sons, Gary and Paul O’Donovan, were named RTÉ Sports Team of the Year at Saturday night’s awards ceremony in Dublin.
The Skibbereen Rowing Club stars won the public vote to end 2016 on a high, a year that saw them row into hearts and minds of the nation after their silver medal heroics at the Olympic Games in Rio – the first Irish sports stars to win an Olympic rowing medal.
The Lisheen brothers also won European gold back in May while Paul went on to win gold at the world senior rowing championships in Rotterdam just after the Olympics.
And there’s more to come in 2017, Paul said.
‘We’re young yet and we’re only starting off, hopefully. We’ve had the taste of a bit of success now so we’re going to try and capitalise on it,’ Paul commented.
Gary added: ‘It’s funny how it’s worked out, we’ve been doing regattas all our lives and racing all our lives and it just so happens that RTE turned up to this regatta!’
Congrats to Gary and Paul from all at The Southern Star.
