SHIRLEY MOLONEY REPORTS

CAROLINE Sugrue was in red-hot form as she pointed Carbery to victory in the first round of the SE Systems Cork Camogie Senior Championship.

The Ballinascarthy and Cork intermediate star scored ten points as the divisional team beat a resilient Ballygarvan at Castle Road.

Carbery captain Eimear White was also in form between the posts for the winners.

However, it was Ballygarvan who got off to a flying start, notching up three unanswered points inside the opening five minutes via two Michaela Buckley efforts either side of a Rebecca Murphy point.

But Sugrue (2) and a Moira Barrett point had the sides level at the quarter mark.

Murphy (2) edged South East side Ballygarvan in front before a Sugrue free left one between the teams at half time, 0-5 to 0-4.

Sugrue carried on in the second half where she left off and two more points saw Carbery hit the front, before Murphy responded for Ballygarvan to tie up the sides on 0-6 apiece.

In the space of five minutes three unanswered Sugrue points gave Carbery control, but it was shortlived when Ballygarvan responded with a brace from Isobelle O’Regan and Cliona O’Leary to cut the lead to the slimmest at the three-quarter stage.

Carbery rallied and Sugrue led the charge by firing over before substitute Maria Keneally pointed from close range to put three between the sides, 0-11 to 0-8.

After Murphy and Kate Wall swapped scores, Sugrue handed Carbery a four-point lead for the first time in the game.

Late points from Maeve Moynihan and Murphy narrowed the gap to two – but Carbery held on to advance to Round 3 which is down for the decision on the weekend of September 15th/16th.

Ballygarvan play Valley Rovers in Round 2 on a date to be confirmed.
