THE good news keeps on coming for Skibbereen RFC.
THE good news keeps on coming for Skibbereen RFC.
Not only has the club an All-Ireland U18 Club final to look forward to, they have also been awarded the honour of hosting Munster’s home fixture against Leinster in the Junior Interprovincial Series later in the month.
The game will take place on Saturday, April 27th at 2.30pm in the Skibbereen Showgrounds.
The Junior Interprovincial Series is a unique competition as it showcases the very best players from each of the four provincial leagues in Ireland. Additionally, the competition is very distinct as provincial games take place at junior rugby club venues that would otherwise not have the opportunity to host high profile matches.
At present, West Cork rugby is certainty in the spotlight. Skibbereen RFC U18.5s were recently crowned Munster champions and will contest the All-Ireland final shortly. Three West Cork teams – Skibbereen, Bandon and Clonakilty – will be involved in the Munster Junior League Division 1 next season. Bandon Grammar School is recognised throughout the province as nursery of young rugby talent.
The exploits of the West Cork contingent – namely Josh Wycherley and John Hodnett – as part of the Grand Slam winning Ireland U20 team is a sign of rich talents emerging from the region. Additionally, the Munster senior squad has strong West Cork links with Darren Sweetnam, Fineen Wycherley plus Skibbereen locals Gavin and Liam Coombes all well known.
Skibbereen RFC has had a strong association with the Munster Junior Interprovincial team with several former players representing the province at this level throughout the years.
Live music and entertainment in the clubhouse will follow the game on April 27th.
Tickets for the game will be available on the day. For more information and updates contact the Skibbereen RFC Facebook page, email [email protected] or ring 087-2140715.
