KEVIN O’BRIEN REPORTS
SCHULL Community College are celebrating a second county championship win in as many weeks as they overcame Milstreet by 14 points last Tuesday in the Cork post-primary U14 1/2 football final played in Kealkil.
After the U16 hurlers’ heroics, it was the footballers turn to win a medal and they were dominant throughout.
Schull began strong and in the opening five minutes they went three points up thanks to scores from Paddy O’Driscoll, Conor Brosnan and Milan Vearncombe.
Millstreet’s midfield worked hard to get a hold of the game and deliver service into the forwards but were shut down by the presence of Darragh O’Shea and Jake Coughlan, so chances were limited.
Schull saw a lot of the ball down the right wing in the first half and wing forward Micheal O’Donovan with corner forward Paddy O’Driscoll were causing all sorts of problems for the Millstreet backline.
Paddy O’Driscoll and Conor Brosnan both added to their tallies while Donnachadh O’Regan got himself on the scoresheet. The half-time score saw Schull lead by 0-6 to 0-3.
The second half was key for Schull, as they stepped up a notch to see off Millstreet. A further two points from Paddy O’Driscoll and Conor Brosnan along with efforts from Jake Coughlan and Ciarán McCarthy saw Schull stretch their lead to eight points after 40 minutes.
On 43 minutes, Paddy O’Driscoll put the game to bed with a super chip goal over the Millstreet goalkeeper.
Despite realising that the game was now out of reach Millstreet kept battling hard, and they made sure the full-back line of Jamie O’Brien, Patrick Sheehan and Tadgh Reidy along with goalkeeper Ryan McSweeney were kept on their toes.
Centre-back Luka Bowen was sweeping up in the half back line and his hard work was rewarded with a score of his own midway through the second half.
On 48 minutes Donnachadh O’Regan broke through the Millstreet defence and he fired his shot into the back of the net and extend the gap to 15 points (2-13 to 0-4). O’Regan and Milan Vearncombe got Schull’s final scores of the game.
Millstreet weren’t leaving without having the last say and in the final five minutes they pulled back 1-2, leaving the final score 2-15 to 1-6.
It has been a month to remember for Schull Community School along with team manager Emmet Vaughan who has overseen both county title victories.
