BERE Island’s postmistress Mary Murphy hit the headlines lately when she sold a winning €500,000 EuroMillions Plus lotto ticket on the island – but her luck was in when two of her sporting heroes dropped by for a quick visit.
Liverpool fan Mary makes the regular trek from Bere Island to Anfield on her yearly holiday away from the post office, but Liverpool came to her when Red legends Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan popped in to say hello last Friday.
The former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland stars were in West Cork last weekend for functions on Friday and Saturday night, and organisers persuade them to head to Bere Island first to surprise Mary.
And that’s what they did!
They called into the post office to buy one of her ‘lucky’ lotto tickets. Mary so was so busy getting the tickets printed she didn’t realise it was them at first, and when she did, it’s fair to say she was over the moon.
Another happy customer!
