Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton, Clayton Blackmore and Lee Martin are coming to town

LIVERPOOL legends Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton plus Manchester United greats Clayton Blackmore and Lee Martin will help raise funds for the West Cork Schoolboys League U12 ETP in Clonakilty next Sunday.

A quartet of former internationals will be part of a fundraising drive for the WCSL Emerging Talent Programme’s U12 Inter-League squad. West Cork’s U12s are raising funds for an upcoming squad trip to Barcelona and ahead of their Subway SFAI Munster U12 Championship campaign.

It will be a unique and fun-filled event where Republic of Ireland, Liverpool and Manchester United fans will have an opportunity to meet the visiting stars. The Sports Complex in Scartagh, Clonakilty, is the venue for Sunday’s friendly between opposing teams led by Liverpool’s Whelan and Houghton against Manchester United’s Blackmore and Martin (12pm kick-off).

Following that, an Aprés Match event will take place at Mick Finn’s Bar in Clonakilty where all four visiting legends will take part in a question and answer session (3pm) prior to watching Sunday’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and United.

A special raffle will also take place during the Q&A session tickets for Manchester United and Liverpool home games plus signed memorabilia amongst the prizes.
Whilst Houghton and Whelan are no strangers to West Cork after several visits in recent seasons, Clayton Blackmore and Lee Martin are important names in Manchester United’s history. Welsh international Blackmore made 186 appearances and scored 19 goals for the Old Trafford club between 1982 and 1994, claiming Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup medals.

Lee Martin will always be associated with scoring the winning goal in the 1990 FA Cup final replay against Crystal Palace at Wembley. The former England U21 international played under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1988 and 1994, making 73 appearances before transferring to Celtic.
