A YOUNG woman who had a slip from sobriety was fined €100 for a public order offence in Bantry.

Flor Murphy, solicitor, appeared at Bantry District Court on behalf of Caroline O’Donovan of Moulnaskeha, Ahakista.

Court presenter Sgt Trish O’Sullivan said Gda Louise Kingston tried to assist the accused who clearly had an injury to her foot but was told to ‘f**k off.’ The sergeant described the incident at High Street on October 28th last, saying: ‘She had no shoes on and was running down the street, roaring and shouting. She had an injury to her foot but wouldn’t let the paramedic look at the injury either,’ she added.

Judge Brendan O’Reilly said: ‘The gardaí are not on the street to be abused, they are there to serve the public.’

In mitigation, Mr Murphy said his client had achieved sobriety and had been doing very well under the supervision of the probation service.

A section four charge of being intoxicated in a public place was withdrawn by the prosecution.
