WEST Cork is to see the arrival of yet more film crews, as the TV version of the hugely successful movie The Young Offenders, is to be shot here this summer.
The series, being shot by BBC, in association with RTÉ, will be a six-episode version of the movie, which was based on the true story of cocaine bales falling off a smuggler’s boat in West Cork in 2007. The original movie was one of Ireland’s fastest-selling box office hits when it opened in 2016, starring Alex Murphy and Chris Walley.
It was the duo’s first ever movie role and catapulted them to instant stardom.
Peter Foott, winner of Best Screenplay for The Young Offenders at the Irish Film and Television Academy awards, is to be the writer, director and executive producer on the television series.
Acclaimed producer Martina Niland (of Irish hit movies Once and Sing Street) will produce the 30 minute epsidoes.
It tells the story of two Cork inner-city teenagers, Conor and Jock, who hear on the radio that bales of cocaine may be washing around in the Atlantic. They head off for West Cork on stolen bicycles and much hilarity ensues.
