A CONTINUOUS white line between Dunmanway and Drimoleague is causing problems for motorists, FF Cllr Joe Carroll has said.
This week he welcomed the news that the Council will look into the issue of the continuous white line on a section of the R586 close to Dunmanway.
Cllr Carroll raised the issue at a meeting of the Western Committee calling for the Council to re-examine the road markings currently in place. He said there was a continuous white line for 6km.
He said that motorists were being penalised for overtaking on this stretch of road despite it being wide enough for cars to pass safely, with clear views of oncoming traffic.
‘I’ve been getting a lot of complaints from frustrated motorists who have been landed with fines and penalty points,’ Cllr Carroll said.
‘I’ve heard from several motorists that when they were stopped by gardaí, they were told that their hands are tied, because it is a Council matter.’ Supt Ger O’Mahony of Clonakilty Garda Station said there hadn’t been any complaints about the R586 markings.
‘People need to realise that a continuous white line is there for a reason and they are not put down lightly and are mostly driven by accidents in the area.
‘They are put in place in consultation with the Council. It might be a straight, long road, but motorists need to be aware of hazards like emerging roads coming onto the main road,’ he said.
