MOST Irish people go on their holidays to West Cork – fact.
That’s according to latest figures from Failte Ireland which shows that we are the most popular destination for domestic visitors and second only to Dublin when it comes to international tourists.
In 2017, this region welcomed 2.1m Irish residents trips generating €419m.
That was well ahead of the 1.5m Irish people who visited Dublin generating €307m. In total, the South West attracted 9m overseas tourists in 2017 who spent €4.9bn during their visit.
That figure was beaten only by Dublin who boasted 5.9m overseas tourists spent €2bn.
A further breakdown revealed that this part of the country attracted 69,000 Northern Ireland resident trips generating €36m for the area. This summer’s almost unprecedented spell of good weather has given a much welcome boost to the tourism and hospitality industries.
In particular, dolphin and whale-watching got a boost.
