West Cork's rumour mill has gone into overdrive with talk of President Trump or his wife coming to visit after a garda escort convoy was seen trialling a trip from the airport to Inchydoney earlier this week.

WEST Cork’s rumour mill has gone into overdrive with talk of President Trump or his wife coming to visit after a garda escort convoy was seen trialling a trip from the airport to Inchydoney earlier this week.

The convoy of two 171D white BMWs, along with at least four garda outriders, was seen travelling from Cork Airport to Inchydoney Lodge and Spa on Tuesday morning in a trial run.

They stopped traffic at all junctions along the way, to give the cars a smooth passage and after a brief stop in the car park of the award-winning hotel, they made the return journey.

The white BMWs were spotted at Bandon Garda Station on Monday but a garda spokesman told The Southern Star they ‘didn’t comment on operational matters’.

A spokesperson for the Inchydoney hotel said they couldn’t comment either, as they have ‘a responsibility for the privacy of all our guests visiting the hotel.’

Lots of names are being bandied about as potential visitors to West Cork, But given that there was a garda element involved, it would appear to rule out the likes of Rod Stewart, who is playing in Cork this weekend. Other suggestions are actors travelling to Schull’s Fastnet Film Festival, who surely have their own private security.

President Trump will be in Ireland on June 5th and will meet the Taoiseach in Shannon. But could wife Melania be planning to fly to Cork instead  and enjoy a pampering visit to stunning Inchydoney? She might like to try an alternative to her husband’s Doonbeg Spa and want a bit of distance from official proceedings.

A video of the convoy entering Clonakilty can be seen on The Southern Star’s Facebook page.
