DUE to the huge amount of applications we receive for Transition Year work experience each year, The Southern Star is introducing a new format for applying for the 2019/2020 school term, and thereafter.
Two successful applicants will be chosen to complete a week’s work experience each, one in October, and one in March/April, both covering dates that coincide with their schools’ TY programmes.
Interested students must apply by Friday September 27th 2019 and a decision will be communicated to them by Friday, October 4th.
Students should send a CV, with a one-page letter of application, and a 300-word proposal, outlining why they are interested in journalism, by email, to [email protected], with TY PROGRAMME in the subject line.
The application letter and proposal must be written by the applicant themselves. The successful two applicants will each be allocated a week’s work experience, and will learn all aspects of working in a modern newsroom, from researching, to interviewing skills, to proof-reading pages, the design and layout process and constructing and writing a news story, in both print and digital formats.
They will also see our expanding use of video and photography, as well as the role of social media in a modern news publishing environment.
If interested in a particular element of reporting (eg sports, courts, etc) we will try to accommodate that request as far as practicable.
Unfortunately, due to the huge interest there has been in recent years regarding these positions, there can be no deviation from this process and canvassing will disqualify.
