Blessed with the third fine Sunday in a row, the Cork West ploughing season continued last weekend when Clonakilty Ploughing Association held their 35th annual match on the lands of the Twomey family at Beanhill, Shannonvale.

BLESSED with the third fine Sunday in a row, the Cork West ploughing season continued last weekend when Clonakilty Ploughing Association held their 35th annual match on the lands of the Twomey family at Beanhill, Shannonvale.

The site is sheltered and low-lying and, with the sun beaming down, the ploughmen enjoyed almost summer-like conditions. There was a large turnout of 44 competitors, including two first-time competitors, namely Jonathan Twomey and Pascal Coughlan.

The land was in stubble and in continuous tillage for a number of years, yet the sod held together quite well and gave many excellent banks of ploughing.

The judges were Co Laois men Patsy Condron, DJ McHugh, Jim Green and Pat Cooney.
