A NEWLY-formed athletic club in Rosscarbery is ‘better than Tinder’ said the club’s treasurer this week, when she revealed that the female members far outnumber the men.
Calling for more men to join its ranks, treasurer Fiona Calnan told The Southern Star that the club is always looking for new members to join its ranks, but that they are keen to get more men to balance the numbers. ‘This is better than any Tinder app for meeting people and it’s a very sociable event. You get to meet people from all around the area, while at the same time getting fit and enjoying the fresh air,’ said Fiona.
‘We currently have about 25 male members but there are double the amount of females and as we are a new club, we would like to get the word out there to prospecting male runners.’
Rosscarbery Steam Runners AC was formed in April of this year and since its formation the club has seen its membership grow to over 70 of varying ages. ‘I would encourage people to just turn up with an open mind and try it for a couple of weeks and see if they like it. What’s great about running is that it’s cost effective and cheaper than joining a gym. Membership is just €40,’ said Fiona.
Rosscarbery Steam Runners AC has, in its short time, seen members take part in numerous 5km runs and marathons. For the winter they will be holding weekly training sessions in the sports complex attached to their local Mount St Michael secondary school.
