WHEN six-year-old Patrick Nelley went to see the scarecrows in Leap last Monday with his mum Eimear  and his uncle Christopher, the last person he expected to meet there was the voice behind his favourite character in ‘The Lion King.’

That character is Scar – Simba’s evil uncle – and the man behind the voice is none other than West Cork resident and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons.

‘Patrick, who has recently moved to West Cork from New Zealand, has been obsessed with The Lion King since he was two years old and weirdly enough his favourite character is Scar,’ said his uncle Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan.

‘We were in Leap at the Scarecrow Festival and when it started raining we took refuge in The Leap Inn. Then Jeremy Irons walked in with a friend after spending the morning horse riding and both my sister Eimear and myself recognised him as we are huge fans of his.’

Eimear told Patrick that the man in the bar was the voice of Scar in The Lion King, something he thought was amazing as he’s such a fan of the character.

‘As a fan of him myself I approached Jeremy to ask if he would mind us taking a picture of him and Patrick and I explained what a big fan Patrick is of The Lion King. As soon as Jeremy spoke Patrick recognised the voice immediately and knew that it was Scar.’

Christopher had nothing but high praise for Jeremy for being so generous and polite in obliging to pose for a photo with his nephew.

‘Patrick was talking about it all the way home and I think the smile on the picture says it all as he made one little kid and two big kids very happy,’ added Christopher, who also praised the community of Leap for another great scarecrow festival.
