SIR – I WISH to respond to the comments of local councillors in relation to the Bandon River Blueway that was published on The Southern Star recently.
Firstly, the stretch of river between Bandon and Innishannon has historically been used by generations of salmon and trout anglers. To propose that this stretch of river be exclusivley used as a blueway for canoes and boat activities will not sit well amongst the recreational fly fishing community who are abundant in the Bandon, Innishannon and Kinsale districts.
The sections of river suggested are totally unsuitable on so many levels.
I can’t see this proposal working out.
It will, however, be met with huge opposition if it is proposed to go ahead.
The river will also need at least 10 years to start any type of environmental recovery due to the hugely invasive and destructive dredging works that have taken place over the past two years.
