A COMMUNITY initiative by Macra na Feirme in partnership with Calor this summer is aiming to bring neighbours together to get to know each other informally and some West Cork clubs are already leading the way.

‘Those living in isolated parts of the country with limited access to services rely on their closest neighbours for support, security and friendship, but physically meeting people is proving more and more difficult in modern Ireland,’ said Joe Coffey from Macra na Feirme.

‘The goal of “Know Your Neighbour” is to tackle this issue and provide communities with an outlet for neighbours to get to know each other and establish a strong support network. It’s never to late to host an event and it can happen any day of the week.’

Several events are taking place across West Cork with Kilmeen Macra holding their annual ‘Know Your Neighbour’ barbecue on Saturday August 6th in the Bealad Community Centre at 7pm. Kilbrittain Macra will be holding a Family Field Day event in conjunction with Know Your Neighbour on Sunday August 7th at 2.30pm, with plenty of activities to suit everyone’s taste.

Caheragh Macra will present a night of dancing with Danny O’Leary and band on Saturday August 6th in the GAA Pavilion in Skibbereen. The night starts off with a BBQ, followed by entertainment from local musicians and a DJ until late.

A raffle will also take place on the night with all proceeds going to a local charity.

If any groups would like to register for ‘Know your Neighbour’ they can go the www.knowyourneighbour.ie and Macra na Feirme will send them packs with t-shirts, caps, posters and balloons to help them with their event.

‘And why not tell us how you got on with your event? We’re always looking for photos and tales from the evening and pictures can be emailed to [email protected],’ added Joe.
