A TOTAL of €12,500 was distributed to various groups in Kinsale, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Kinsale Lions Club throughout 2017.

At a recent ceremony in the Trident Hotel, 12 different groups were presented with cheques for various amounts by members of the town’s Lions Club.

Chief Supt Con Cadogan, president of the Kinsale Lions Club said: ‘We raised this money through various events that we held during the year. Some of these would include our annual Golf Classic, sponsored cycle, concerts and numerous events. Every cent that comes in goes back.’

Fergal McCarthy, principal of Kinsale Community School,  was presented with a cheque which will go to an educational fund at the school. Other organisations who were to benefit included the local St Vincent de Paul, Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, St Multose Church, St John’s Chruch and the Kinsale Carmelite Lourdes Fund.

‘Another group that received a cheque were KYSS (Kinsale Youth Support Services) who do great work in Kinsale and I can see that on the ground here with the drop in youth suicides. Also Kinsale Youth Café received a cheque and what’s great about this is the youths are involved in the running of this.’

Traders also received a donation for their Christmas lights, as did the Cork City Hospital Children’s Club, who do tremendous work in supporting families and their children while staying in hospital.

To round off a very successful year Kinsale Lions Club will host their annual Christmas Day Swim at the Pier Head at 1.15pm.

‘We are looking for support for this event. It will be a great day and there will be changing and showering facilities in the Yacht Club afterwards and a prize for the most aptly dressed swimmer,’ added Chief Supt Cadogan.
