KILCROHANE native Jimmy Daly was recently honoured with the ‘Corkman of the Year’ award at the annual Rebel Cork Benevolent Association’s dinner-dance.

Jimmy has resided in the Californian city since 1980, working as a general contractor, he has been an active member of Rebel Cork.

The presentation of the award to Jimmy at San Francisco’s United Irish Cultural Center was a popular one – in fact, the San Francisco City Board of Supervisors acknowledged his contribution to the Rebel Cork club over the years by passing a resolution in City Hall chambers, declaring Saturday, December 3rd, as Jimmy Daly Day in San Francisco!

Jimmy’s wife Nancy, daughter Katie and son James, who both work in Southern California, made the journey north to witness their father accept the highest honoured bestowed to a member of the club. Rebel Cork is one of the city’s oldest extant fraternal organisations, having been established in San Francisco in 1883.

Also, honoured on the night was Michael Gowen from Glenville in East Cork, who won a lifetime achievement award. He has been a member of the club for 57 years and turned 90 last July.
