Glenmar Shellfish Ltd – a fish-processing company based in Union Hall – has announced the acquisition of the assets, goodwill, and facilities of Carr Shellfish Ltd, which is based in Tallow.
GLENMAR Shellfish Ltd – a fish-processing company based in Union Hall – has announced the acquisition of the assets, goodwill, and facilities of Carr Shellfish Ltd, which is based in Tallow.
Glenmar’s CEO, Mel Bendon, told The Southern Star: ‘This long-established business will fit Glenmar Shellfish Ltd’s growth strategy and allow us to broaden our range of products.’
The new products will include 450 tonnes per annum of raw and cooked brown crab, and 150 tonnes per annum of cooked mussels in the bag.
Glenmar Shellfish Ltd also has plans to process between 150 and 200 tonnes of frozen raw and cooked prawns, as well as other products in the future.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Mr Bendon said: ‘We are delighted to welcome the very professional Carr team into the Glenmar family and are looking forward to working with them.’
The company CEO confirmed that, in addition to the 70 people already employed by Glenmar Shellfish Ltd, the number of people employed by the company would increase to include Carr’s 14 full-time and 15 part-time employees. Mr Bendon also confirmed that there are further job announcements on the cards. ‘As production increases,’ he said, ‘so too will the company’s staffing levels.’
Last year, Lisavaird Food Group Ltd – a division of Lisavaird Co-Operative Creamery Ltd – acquired a majority stake in Glenmar Shellfish Ltd. The general manager of Lisavaird Co-op, Pat Moriarty, said the investment would allow the co-op to further diversify its business interests and ‘establish a presence in the seafood sector.’
Mr Bendon described Lisavaird as ‘a perfect partner for Glenmar because it would help develop the company as part of a broader food group.’
Mr Bendon told The Southern Star: ‘We have built a strong and profitable company that includes the 30 employed in Union Hall and 40 or more at our base at the Millennium Business Park in Dublin.
‘This latest development will also help the company to grow,’ and Mr Moriarty said it was a strategy that was fully endorsed by Lisavaird.
