Photographs of the domestic refuse – which was dumped on land outside of Glengarriff – were taken by a local woman who put them up on Facebook.
Claire O’Sullivan also reported the matter – which occurred on Friday, January 19th last – to the gardaí in Bantry.
The gardaí have plenty to go on because the scattered rubbish contained a prescription packet with a person’s name clearly visible on it.
Claire told The Southern Star: ‘This was not a once-off event, it is a regular occurrence, and it had got to the stage that I decided to shame the culprit publicly on Facebook.’
Within three or four hours of posting it online, the story was shared more than 500 times, but Claire decided to take it down because some of the comments were inappropriate.
She was, however, delighted when The Southern Star contacted her because she believes the issue should be highlighted. ‘This should be highlighted in the hope that people will think twice before throwing their rubbish over a fence -instead of taking it to a recycling centre.’
