A fire this morning has caused serious damage to the iconic Briery Gap building in the centre of Macroom.
A FIRE broke out around 8am this (Saturday) morning at the iconic Briery Gap building in the centre of Macroom, owned by Cork County Council and which houses the library and a theatre-cum-cinema.
Units from the Macroom, Millstreet and Ballincollig fire stations attended the scene and brought the blaze under control. Macroom Gardaí were also present along with a local ambulance crew.
It was understood that nobody was injured in the fire, but a lot of damage was caused within the building.
Speculation is that the fire may have been caused an electrical fault and a full investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
