THE only female member of West Cork’s Municipal District has confirmed she will not be seeking re-election.
Bantry’s Mary Hegarty – who was first elected as a Fine Gael member of Bantry Town Commissioners in 2004 and went on to be re-elected to the West Cork Municipal District five years ago – has confirmed that she is stepping down.
Cllr Hegarty said: ‘It was a great opportunity and I am delighted that there will be two female Fine Gael candidates standing in the Skibbereen area, and one female Fine Gael candidate in Bantry.’
As a result of the recommendations of a recent boundary commission, the West Cork Municipal District is now to have nine councillors – with five coming from a newly defined Skibbereen area, and four from the Bantry area.
