A LARGE crowd attended the recent reception for the 34th annual Collins, Brooks & Associates Window Box and Hanging Basket prizegiving ceremony in Fernhill House Hotel, hosted by the Municipal District of West Cork. The occasion coincided with the firm’s 75th anniversary of its establishment in the town.

Chairman of the Western Committee, Cllr Paul Hayes, who represented the Mayor of Cork County, in congratulating all concerned, said that the floral displays all over Clonakilty town are much admired with all sections of the community involved in this great civic exercise. Clonakilty Town Mayor, Mrs Gretta O’Donovan, recalled the wonderful gesture of the late Liam Collins, in creating such a worthy initiative which bestows an unique welcome to all who come to visit.

Mrs Una Fleming of AOIFA, who judged the blooms, complimented the townspeople on the exceptional quality of the displays and outlined the requirements of the competition.

Best overall winners, James Wharton and Jessie Hurley, of The Chunky Chip were presented with the Liam and Betty Collins perpetual rose bowl by Mrs Elizabeth O’Sullivan. This year marked not only the 75th anniversary of the solicitor firm’s year in Clonakilty, but their 34th year of unbroken generous sponsorship of the competition.

Ms Roni Collins, on behalf of the sponsors, praised all concerned and thanked Mr Justin England, Municipal District Officer of West Cork, for the hospitality and ongoing support.

To the enthusiastic applause of all present, she launched the 35th competition, setting the scene for another floral extravaganza in Clonakilty.
