The Castletownbere lifeboat was tasked by Valentia Coastguard Radio today at 12.26pm to go to the assistance of a fishing boat which caught fire and started taking in water.

The lifeboat was tasked by Valentia Coastguard Radio today at 12.26 to go to the assistance of a Castletownbere fishing boat which caught fire and started taking water. The two persons on board eventually took to their liferaft. Two local boats ‘Orchid’ and ‘Stephanie’ stood by to offer assistance.
The lifeboat, under the command of coxswain Dan Noonan, was launched on service within minutes and arrived onscene in just over an hour. Other rescue services who attended the emergency included Shannon-based Rescue Helicopter 115, Derrynane Inshore Rescue Boat and Ballinskelligs lnshore Rescue.
The two rescued fisherman, who were uninjured, were transferred from the Ballinskelligs lnshore Rescue boat to the Castletownbere Lifeboat and are expected back in Castletownbere by 15.45 this afternoon.
