THE first autumn call-out for Castletownbere Coast Guard began at 5.25pm last night when the team was alerted to a hillwalker in difficulty near Barley Lake in Glengarriff.
The casualty, a man in his 40s who had been hiking with a friend, had developed a sudden knee problem and could walk no further.
Based on the satnav co-ordinates given, the Coast Guard crew located the pair about 1km west of the lake at an elevation of 445m.
The casualty was packaged for a stretcher carry, and transported to the car park – a tough journey of about 2km in very foggy & boggy conditions. As the casualty did not require further medical assistance at that point, the two walkers were then taken back to their vehicle.
After returning to the station and washing down a load of muddy gear, the Coast Guard team stood down at 10.45pm.
