TRUCKERS are finding it increasingly difficult to park up for rest breaks along the designated long parking bays on the Glaslinn Road in Bandon because cars are parked there all day.

Cllr John Michael Foley (Fine Gael) raised the issue at a meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District and said that he has received numerous complaints from truck drivers and also from truck companies.

‘These trucks can’t pull in because there are cars parked there all day across from Billy Cahalane’s service station,’ said Cllr Foley.

‘This is very serious as they need to take rest breaks and it’s all connected to the tachograph and their hours of driving.

‘We have lots of cattle trucks coming through Bandon and these spaces are very important for them.’

Cllr Gillian Coughlan (FF) said these areas should be formulised as long parking spaces and said it’s currently a bit haphazard.

‘It’s not fair that cars are parked there all day.

‘The reality is that these truck drivers must stop for rest breaks and this move will also benefit retail businesses in the town.

Senior executive engineer Richard Cahill said he will liaise with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on this and agreed with councillors that is an ideal area for trucks to pull in for rest stops.
