SKIBBEREEN’S second walking festival looks set to attract large numbers to the area at the end of this month.
The second such festival takes place over the weekend of September 28th, 29th and 30th and the schedule has something for walkers of all abilities.
Guided and graded walks will take place along the region’s quiet and picturesque country roads (with some off-road sections) across the three days.
Among the many highlights are a walk from Lisheen to Cunnamore Pier before hopping on the ferry to explore Hare Island. Another walk takes place in Long Island.
Also likely to be popular is Terri Kearney from Skibbereen Heritage Centre’s walk through 4,000 years of Lough Hyne’s history. It will cover the history, archaeology and folklore of this unique salt-water lake, taking in the Great Famine, Bronze Age artefacts and monuments, Holy Wells, coffin stones, castles, set dancing and more.
The festival is in association with Skibbereen Chamber of Commerce and is supported Skibbereen and Bandon credit unions.
Walks cost between €10 and €15 and the meeting point for them all is Skibbereen Heritage Centre with bus transport provided to and from out of town walks.Pre registering is required and dogs aren’t allowed. See skibbereen.ie for more.
